1. Plan Your Trip: Decide on a grocery store and set a date and time for your visit.

2. Prepare: Review these questions with your child(ren) before going to the store. This will help them think about their shopping trip in advance.

  • Are you shopping for wants or needs?
  • How will you keep track of your spending while shopping?
  • How can discounts and sales help you when you shop?

3. Distribute Budgets: Give each child a budget based on their age group (e.g., $10 for younger kids, $20 for middle kids, $30 for older kids or whatever works within your budget).

4. Shopping Time: Allow the kids to shop for items they want, reminding them to keep track of their spending.

5. Check Out: The cashier will total the cost of the items for each child and check if the shopper stayed within their budget.

6. Reflect and Discuss: Talk about the shopping experience, focusing on financial decisions, budgeting, and the importance of saving.

Reflection and Discussion Questions

Here are some Reflect and Discuss questions parents can ask their kids after the Grocery Store Adventure:

  • Needs vs. Wants
    • What items did you buy that were needs? What about wants?
    • How did you decide which items were more important to buy?
  • Budgeting:
    • Did you stay within your budget? If not, what made it difficult?
    • How did you keep track of your spending while shopping?
  • Smart Shopping:
    • Did you find any items on sale or with discounts? How did that affect your choices?
    • Did you compare prices between different brands? What did you learn from that?
  • Challenges:
    • What was the hardest part of sticking to your budget?
    • Were there any items you wanted but couldn’t afford? How did you handle that?
  • Future Planning:
    • If you had to do this again, what would you do differently?
    • How can you apply what you learned today to future shopping trips?

These questions can help deepen the learning experience and encourage kids to think critically about their financial decisions.

Enjoy your Grocery Store Adventure and watch your kids become financially savvy shoppers!
